Lay Research Summary:
Macrophages are innate immune cells important to protect us from infection and to eliminate damaged cells in our bodies. Macrophages also play different roles in cancer development. They can protect us from tumor spreading in early progression stages to later established stages of cancer. Peroxisomes are small structure in each cell including macrophages that are important to digest fats and they can turn macrophages on. Despite the critical role of peroxisomes in controlling every cell function, the role of peroxisomes in macrophages activation to fight cancer are not well known.
