Research Interests:
Translational control, internal ribosome entry sites (IRES), biomarkers
Dr. Stephen Lewis is studying the role of translational control and novel translation initiation mechanisms in the development and progression of cancer. Translational control describes the regulation of gene expression through specific and regulated utilization of mRNA in protein synthesis. Dr. Lewis’s research is currently addressing the mechanisms underlying novel translation initiation, such as internal ribosome entry site (IRES)-mediated translation, and their role in cellular processes and disease. Specifically, he is focusing on the role of deregulated translational control in cancer and how such changes contribute to the development of the disease. These investigations may lead to the discovery of new biomarkers for specific cancers and potential therapeutic targets.
Involvement with BHCRI to date:
Dr. Lewis is a BHCRI Senior Scientist and chair of the BHCRI Management Advisory Council.
