Dr. Sevtap Savas, PhD

Appointments:

Professor, Division of Biomedical Sciences (primary); Division of Community Health and Humanities (cross-appointment) and Discipline of Oncology (cross-appointment)

Affiliations:

Faculty of Medicine, Memorial University of Newfoundland

Research Interests:

My lab is interested in:

– identification of prognostic markers in cancer with a current focus of genetic markers and colorectal cancer

– development of biological databases

– evaluating social outcomes in cancer and identifying their predictors

– large scale sequencing analyses with respect to disease and outcome features in colorectal cancer

– patient-oriented research, public engagement and advocacy

Survival Studies in Cancer

In collaboration with investigators from Newfoundland Colorectal Cancer Registry and other institutions, my lab focuses on candidate pathway and genome-wide survival studies in colorectal cancer. Currently, we examine genetic variations, such as SNPs and copy number variations (CNVs), and their statistical associations with outcome risk (e.g. recurrence and death) in colorectal cancer. We also started to work on interacting prognostic variables — a very under-studied and under-appreciated type of biomarkers — using candidate gene and genome-wide settings. The overall aim in these projects is to understand the biology of variable survival outcomes among patients and to develop prognostic indices.
