The role of the microbiome in cancer
The human microbiome is the community of microbes that inhabit and interact with the human body. The microbiome interacts with the immune system, metabolizes and alters drugs, and can defend against pathogens. These interactions are becoming important in studying various types of cancer to better understand variance in treatment outcomes and toxicity as well as disease severity and progression. My research focuses on identifying and leveraging the differences in the microbiome using DNA sequencing technology coupled with intelligent computational methods.
