Fats and cancer cells

Cancer cells undergo adaptations that allow them to survive and multiply. One of the changes in many types of cancer cells is how they use lipids (or fats). We and others have shown that cancer cells increase their ability to use sugars to make more fatty acids. This allows them to have the necessary types of lipids to make new membranes that are required for cells to grown and divide. I am interested in this area of research because understanding how cancer cells change their use of lipids may identify new ways of treating cancers.

Hometown: Was born in Ottawa, but was brought up in Montréal and Moncton. I consider Moncton my hometown.

What brought you to your current institution? I was the VP of Research and Development at a small Biopharmaceutical company in Charleston, South Carolina, when I was recruited to Université de Moncton as a Canada Research Chair.
