Blocking the drivers of tumour growth and metastasis
Dr. David Waisman is exploring the molecular mechanisms that enable cancer cells to grow, invade surrounding tissues, and spread to distant parts of the body. He and his research team are working on several strategies that aim to stop this deadly chain of events. One involves blocking angiogenesis, the process that enables tumours to develop blood vessels that then tap into the blood supply for nutrients that fuel their growth. The researchers are pursuing ways to destroy these blood vessels and starve the tumour. At the same time, they are disabling a cell-surface protein, called S100A10, which plays a key role in allowing tumour cells to clear a path to the bloodstream and metastasize to other organs and tissues.
Involvement with BHCRI to date:
Dr. Waisman is a BHCRI Senior Scientist and a member of the BHCRI Board who has served on a BHCRI Scientific Review Committee and has presented at a BHCRI Seminar Series. Dr. Waisman is also a supervisor for CRTP trainees.
