Cancer prevention
I examine the way cancer, cancer risk, and cancer prevention are conceptualized and how such conceptualizations influence cancer control efforts. My overall research plan is to develop effective population-based cancer control programs. For my Ph.D., I examined Kenyan youth’s understanding of cancer, cancer risk, and cancer prevention. At UNB, my first project, which was funded by the BHCRI new investigator award, is examining the perspectives and experiences of immigrant and refugee adults towards cancer screening as a first step towards improving their screening for breast, colon, and cervical cancer. My second project is examining youth’s understanding and intention to use Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) as a way of preventing cancer. In the wake of increased risk for cancer later in their lives, I believe study findings will be useful in promoting HPV vaccination for newcomer youth.

What brought you to your current institution?
I am passionate about research on cancer prevention. When I was looking for a place to pursue my research goals, I found the University of New Brunswick (UNB) and was impressed by the kind of research opportunities the university had. Limited work has been done with regards to cancer prevention among immigrants and refugees in New Brunswick and joining UNB was ideal for me to carry out such research.

Involvement with BHCRI to date:
I have been an Associate Member at BHCRI for the past one year. As an associate, I have been involved in reviewing grant applications and committee meetings. In the future, I hope to be involved with workshops/conferences and supervision of CRTP trainees.
