Exploring the mysteries of occult cancer and cancer recurrence:
Together with surgeons and medical oncologists, we are collaborating with scientists at the National Research Council in Halifax to study cancer cells in the bloodstream of patients who are given chemotherapy with a curative goal after surgery. Although these cancer cells cannot be typically detected, we are studying ways to extract them from the blood, and subsequently study their genetic pattern. Our aim is to discover why some of these cells may survive and disseminate throughout the body – later causing cancer relapse, while others do not.
