Lay Research Summary:

Medical assistance in dying (MAID) has been received by over 10,000 Canadians in 2021 alone – over 60% of whom received it because of their cancer. Because of this, understanding the rationale behind a cancer survivors’ endorsement or opposition of MAID is crucial in ensuring the correct resources, information, support, and education are offered. This ensures an informed decision for or against MAID is done so autonomously, should their health decline. To make this insight accessible to researchers and physicians, our research aims to design and validate a questionnaire that identifies a cancer survivor’s reasoning behind their willingness to consider MAID for themselves.

Career aspirations:

I aim to pursue a career in clinical psychology working as either a clinician or in an academic clinic. I hope to provide services for those in need of diagnosis and treatment and expand on the available knowledge of psychological wellness for those who are terminally or chronically ill, in palliative care, living with disability, or facing potentially life-limiting illness. I hope to support and improve situational control and bodily autonomy for those who are ill or require care through informed and expert practice and effective clinical research.
