Project Title:

Environmental and Occupational Risks for Cancer in Atlantic Canada: Predictive and Geospacial Modelling

Research Summary:

Cancer is a common disease in Canada. Cancer rates in the Atlantic region are higher
when compared to the rest of the country. This includes rates for breast, prostate, lung, and
colorectal cancer, which are the most common cancers in Canada. There are many risk factors
for cancer. These risks can come from sources like exposure to environmental toxins, work-related
exposures and habits and lifestyle choices. To determine which factors are most important for the development of cancer, predictive models are used. These determine one’s risk of cancer compared to the population
by using data from patients. My project will use the Atlantic PATH database and will show which
risk factors are most important for cancer development in Atlantic Canada. My research will
help focus cancer detection strategies on those who are at the greatest risk of cancer
development.
