Dr. Michael Bezuhly, MD, MSc, SM, FRCSC, FAAP

Appointments:

Research Director, Division of Plastic Surgery; Program Director, Clinician-Investigator Program and Medical Research Graduate Program; Associate Professor, Departments of Surgery and Microbiology & Immunology, Dalhousie University

Head, Division of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, IWK Health Centre

Affiliations:

Dalhousie University; IWK Health Centre

Research Interests:

breast cancer; melanoma; adipose-derived stem cells; fibrosis; cancer-associated fibroblasts; post-oncologic reconstruction.

For many patients, cancer treatment doesn’t end with the removal of a tumor, but when the whole patient has been restored through reconstruction. My research examines ways of optimizing reconstructive techniques such as autologous fat grafting and minimizing post-operative scarring and fibrosis while reducing the risk of cancer recurrence.

What brought you to your current institution? Dalhousie University and the IWK Health Centre allow me to seamlessly balance my research and clinical commitments as a surgeon-scientist.

Hometown: Toronto

Involvement with BHCRI to date:

I am a Senior Scientist and I have served on the steering committee for past Terry Fox Research Institute student symposia and have supervised CRTP trainees.
